sibling rivalry?

discourse. discontent. deafening din... my living room (and the girls' respective playgroups) were filled to the brim with that today (and all month for that matter).  could it finally be the terrible two's rearing their ugly head (and i personally think it's the 'three's' that parents should worry about)... is it that madeline is making a stand against the constant 'no-no-mooolllllllllly's!!!' and molly is getting rattled off her self-proclaimed 'queen of the mountain' status?  maybe it's just hot and humid?  i don't know, but this afternoon i almost went nuts... literally... i was actually laughing at elmo's world... because i found it funny... oh. my. god.

ms. madeline's surgery last week went famously well (i'll post pictures soon).  it was indeed a one night stay (a record for us) and the little chicky has never looked back.  every once in awhile she puts her chin down and tries to make her signature 'farting' sound with her stoma (what can i say?  all class...) but for the most part, she is even more excited to dump buckets of water in the tub over her own head.  if you don't hear about our madeline swimming in the olympics someday i will eat my hat.

with the stoma closed (which may or may not have conveniently coincided with her finally getting some traction in the walking department) she has once again turned the corner developmentally.  she's practically running around (still looking like she was aboard a ship in the bering sea for months but whatever... it's so darn cute), is singing and babbling (quite loudly i might add), saying her first words (first word: 'ball;' second word: 'row row;' (the girl is obsessed with 'row row row your boat') third word: 'buh-bye'), signing in some consecutive phrases (giving the sign for 'more' and 'go' repeatedly on the swing), and even eating more!  mac and cheese, yes please! and i dare say... she had a bite of one of her nurse's ham and cheese sandwich.  it was a banner day here!

in a way i feel a bit bad for our little molly, even though she has such a big personality she could never be outshone (listen not everyone can pull off wearing a tutu, purple sunglasses and crocs while helping mommy water the flowers).  madeline is going through significant changes and gets quite a bit of fanfare around here.  we can't help it.  last year at this time she needed pillows around her to help her *sit up.*  this year she can run to the swingset, sign 'help up please,' eat cheese doodles and laugh her head off.

i mention this because molly has been acting out quite a bit lately,  i know it comes with the toddler package , but i've noticed she's willing to really test limits and she's not necessarily looking for good attention... just attention.  it's frustrating, but trying to reason with a two year old is... well. ridiculous.

i went to the thrift store with my sister a couple of months ago just to check out the place and as i was perusing the books a book called 'parenting the strong-willed child' literally fell off the bookshelf and onto the floor.  i bought it, thinking that it may have a good hint or to.  after all those that know me know i may or may not tend to have a little bit of a strong-willed personality of my own... but could it have been a premonition?  doooeeeooooeeeeoooo....

my solution for right now is to build in a little more one on one time with the girls.  i'm taking ms. molly to another class just on her own.  it's a mommy and me 'baby ballerina' class.  i think she's going to love it.

GIVEAWAY TIME: $25 TARGET giftcard (from Huggies Pull-ups!)

oh the potty is a touchy subject in this house... one day we're pro-potty and the next day we run around screaming... naked... in the living room... let me clarify... the two year olds are running around naked.  the mom is chasing after them with diapers, hoping beyond anything they don't decide to pee on the floor.

i needed something to stir up some consistent enthusiam... and i may have found it in huggies big kids character calls!

the girls went bananas over their call from not only the disney princess, but from one of the cars characters (they love girly stuff, but love cars even more!!!)

i took them to target to get some more "big kid pants."  molly seemed excited.  madeline?  not so much...

the calls are great because you can schedule the calls right to your phone or play the messages instantly on your computer!  there are potty training tips and tools for the parents too!

another surgery...

our ms. madeline just never, ever fails to amaze me... she's been home from the hospital for an entire year this past tuesday.  i still can't process how we managed to live without her home for the first eighteen months... and i *still* can't believe the progress she's made over the past year.  if you told me last june that we would be heading into the last stages of 'trach-dom' i honestly would not have believed you!

last june 14 we brought home a puffy, scared eighteen month old baby with a trach and who couldn't even sit or stand up on her own.  now, twelve months later, i sit here contemplating her last of the 'trach' surgeries.  for those that know madeline, you'd see that the stoma from where her trach was never quite closed.  to us it's normal... we call it third nostril and it's just always been a part of her.  it presents a huge problem around water, even two inches in the bathtub and while i'm disappointed it didn't close on its' own, i'm pretty freakin excited to have that thing gone!

i can't wait to give her a bath without fear she's going to choke or vomit... i'm even more excited to get her in the ocean, in the pool... in the waterpark at sesame place!  (woo hoo, here we come in august!)

GIVEAWAY TIME: sand gone sand remover review/giveaway

we are so lucky to live so close to the ocean here... i regularly hump all of the beach-y crap take the girls to the beach, even when the weather isn't perfect just to let them see the sights and toddle around.  consequently my car is consistently filled with a fine layer of the bane of my existence... sand!  i love the beach, but cannot stand the feeling of sand all stuck to my feet.  blech.  those that say they love the feeling of sand between their toes clearly have never spent a day with it grinding around in their flip-flops.

looks cute... but just try to get their sneakers back on!

along comes sand gone.  sand gone is a dry body powder that when applied to sandy parts of your body removes the sand leaving your skin soft and smooth.  now when i first got this, i must admit i was a little skeptical.  i mean, how can i have grown up around the beach, but never known that you could just add powder and the sand falls off?  never.  wrong!  it totally works.  i originally tried it on the girls after a quick visit to the germ breeding ground for the ages the local playground sandbox.  it was only on their hands, but it worked wonders and we were able to continue on our merry way without sand in the mouth and all over the stroller.

i've used it on myself after a walk on the beach and i love that you can use it and not have to necessarily rinse your feet off with water.  it's so much easier not having wet feet trying to get in the car.

sand gone comes in an 8 oz container with a powder puff for easy application... and it even has a hint of coconut scent.  it's glorious!

running ramblings

i am seriously considering signing up for the half marathon in disney in february 2012... it is a princess half marathon after all.  i haven't ran since the girls were conceived, so i'm not sure if i'm setting the bar too high.  i know i can run and i like it, it's just getting back into it... this isn't much of a blog post, but i wanted to share b/c this big thought is keeping me up at midnight.  :)

where's the "the"

i'm not going to say i don't get irked by some pretty strange things.  people that don't move up in the queue, ladies that decide they need to go find something else at the grocery store once they've put all their stuff on the belt, men that wear speedos (ok, that one doesn't irk me as much as it grosses me out)... but i've noticed something lately that's driving me bananas!

it seems people are dropping the 'the.'  as in, 'i'm going to prom with joe,' or 'everyone pay's kid's price.'  it's THE prom... and everyone should pay THE kid's price.  why does it bother me so?  perhaps i'm nuts... oh well, happy friday.

CLOSED: GIVEAWAY TIME: prefense alcohol-free sanitizer review/giveaway

Sponsored by Tomoson.com

anyone who has hung out with me over the past couple of years knows i'm a germ nut... spending all that time in the nicu with preemies (and having the docs scare the living bejeezus out of you when going home with them) will do that to you.  i spent months over the winter with dry and cracked hands, only to apply sanitizer to them and feel the burn (and not in a good way).  ouch!  the alcohol was killing my poor hands.

well, i think i've found something that might work really well, especially with the girls.   prefense is VERY different from all of the other brands of hand sanitizer on the market. here are 6 wonderful reasons why:
  1. prefense is made of all-natural organic ingredients and has absolutely NO alcohol in it!
  2. their technology protects you for 24 hours or 10 hand washings!
  3. prefense is non-toxic and safe for kids! (SO important over here!)
  4. prefense is silica based which means it doesn’t dry out your hands like traditional alcohol sanitizers. it actually smoothes and softens your hands.
  5. prefense protects against staph, strep, e.coli, drug resistant MRSA strains, and more.
  6. because “one spray lasts all day” our 1.5 oz Prefense Botanicals Hand Sanitizer offers 120 applications, costing only $.08 per day, compared to $1.20 per day with alcohol hand sanitizers.
so far i'm loving this stuff!!! ...and it doesn't smell like normal sanitizer either... so no nicu flashbacks :)

bookworms and beachballs

there have been a lot of posts popping up on my rss lately about summer reads.  some people are headed to the beach and others just looking for something new... i know someday i'll get to the point where my girls will play nicely (and stationary) where i can take my eyes off them and actually read something during the day, but for now i am relegated to reading after 11pm when all is quiet... just me and my kindle and my kindle book light... yup, this thing.  love it!

anyhow, here are a couple that i've read recently, other than the free classics that amazon offers for the kindle... remember all those books we were supposed to read in high school (and then didn't and ran out the night before the test to the local bookstore to get the cliff notes?)  well, now i'm reading them.  they're not so bad :)

the glass castle by jeannette walls is one of the latest i've read.  it's a memoir/autobiography of sorts, but extremely catchy.  it seems the crazier the family, the better the book.

the weird sisters by eleanor brown is another good read.  i saw it pop up in a magazine somewhere and am glad i took the time to read it.  i find some of the storyline pretty implausible, but i just remember it's fiction and leave it at that.

the help by kathryn stockett is (apparently) a controversial book and is another winding and descriptive story about the haves and have-nots of Southern social status in the 1960s.  perhaps the most captivating thing for me is the fact that these things supposedly only took place 40-50 years ago.  how is that possible?

if you're *really* looking for a fairly brainless gushy story that caters to us (and by us, i mean 30-something chicky) anything by jodi picoult or elin hilderbrand will do.  you can easily put them down and pick them up again where you left off... so when you're at the beach chasing little people and beachballs, you won't feel like you're lost.

my next read comes at the recommendation of a friend...  the kitchen house by kathleen grisom.  i'll let you know how i like it!

ode to madeline

it's a somewhat wordless tuesday... i've been spending a lot of time thinking about where we were one year ago... two years ago...  madeline you're amazing and i love you!!!

june 2009

june 2010

june 2011

ok, so she's not looking at the camera, but look at that pure unadulterated joy.  over bubbles.  she's been through so much and still just keeps on smiling.  have i mentioned how much i love her?

mommy's separation anxiety

today consisted of a pretty quiet morning (although i must admit i did another 'mother of the year award' type of thing and took the kids out to swing in the backyard in their pjs... well, i didn't want them in their 'going out' outfits and certainly didn't want a third outfit thrown in the mix.  the laundry in getting out of control as it is (how on earth does my neighbor with 11 kids (and *two* on the way (seriously) do it?!?))  ok, enough parentheses...

i went to a lovely baby shower for a lovely friend at her parent's lovely house.  it was a great time and i actually got to sit (!) and talk (!!) uninterrupted... for more than two sentences.  granted we talked mostly about kids, but it was so nice to see all of those wonderful friends again.  i feel like as time goes by, we are all getting busier and busier and it is so hard to keep the circle together.  thank god for my friends though because they put through the extra effort to make sure we all see each other.  i'm so thankful for that.

during all of this, my darling husband, for pretty much the very first time, took them in the car... onto the highway (!) where they attended a birthday party for another friend's adorable daughter (hi c!  hope it was a bubbly birthday!)

anyhow, i noticed that i couldn't help but feel anxious as i sat there trying to relax.  my mind kept wandering back to my m&m and dh.  did he dress them correctly?  did he bring enough warm clothes (for june, it was *darn* cold here today!)?  will he keep molly from eating 15 cupcakes?

and then it hit me.  well, not really... i already knew this, but it was strange how it just came over me... **holy crap** i'm a control freak!  why am i in the next state worrying if my husband remembered extra socks or diapers?  why am i worried that perhaps he didn't put bows in their hair.  seriously, what is my deal?

i think it's gotten worse a bit since i'm now a stay-at-home mommy.  i'm with them pretty much 24/7 and the separation anxiety **for me** is getting worse.  i'll be that mom holding onto my kids' legs as they trot into preschool.  i need to figure this out before i want to permanently glue them to my hips.  i'm thinking it stems from the whole long hospitalization and being separated for so long and the fact that i can't ignore... this little sliver of tie in our lives is going to go by so fast.  they're already 29 months!  pretty soon i'll be getting eye rolls and being asked to drop them off around the corner.

ok, now i'm crying.  i gotta go to bed.  :)

clutter chaos

what a crazy month this has been... now that i'm not working, i feel busier than i ever did... and i feel like i'm getting less done.  i'm feeling the need to be more organized, but i just can't seem to make it happen.  my house slowly turns to a disaster area until i can't take it anymore and then i go on a "superwife" (that's what my husband calls that mode) mission to rid the house of anything extraneous.  probably not the best way to go about it and certainly not cost effective.  i think it just comes down to the fact that our family is slowly just outgrowing this house.  that stinks, of course, because we're pretty much stuck here for now.  i would love to know other's ideas for dealing with the clutter.  i mean it's not 'hoarders' bad, but the house definitely looks lived in (and there are toddlers here!)

i'll also preface this by saying, 'i love you dear husband!' ... but boy, are you messy.  i'm not sure whether he just doesn't notice it or whether he forgets he puts things down but it's like the hansel and gretel fairytale... i can see exactly where he's been.  you can train two-year-olds... a 35 year old is much more resistant!

ok, so clutter advice please!  i know that not everyone lives in these crazy mcmansions made out of vinyl and plywood with vaulted ceilings and closets (what are those???)

... some of you must live in a 'quaint' 'antique' type of house where there is no open floor plan and lots of nooks and crannies.  how do you do it?  i'm going out of my mind for sure.
